How to Make Origami Animal Faces

These three origami models are great for teaching mountain and valley folds to young beginners. While these origami animal faces are very simple, there are many possibilities for creating many shapes, and each model lets the folder be creative by decorating unique faces.

Both the dog and cat faces should be easy to complete for even the smallest hands, so be sure to practice them before moving on to the rabbit face, which is a little bit more difficult.

Note: For these easy origami animal faces, you can use origami paper that is a different color on each side, however, the finished models will only show the color that is facing away from you in Step 1.

Origami Dog Face

  1. Start with a square sheet of paper. Turn it so that it looks like a diamond. The color side should be underneath.
  2. Fold the paper in half. The top corner will touch the bottom corner. This is called a Shawl Base.
  3. Fold the paper in half. The left corner should touch the right corner. Then unfold.
  4. Fold the left and right corners down. They will meet in the middle of the triangle at the top. These are the dog’s ears. Make sure to leave enough room for the face!
  5. It's time to shape the face! Fold a little bit of the top and bottom corners behind. There are no guide marks. Feel free to fold what looks good to you.
  6. The dog face is complete, but it needs eyes, a nose, and a mouth!

Origami Cat Face

  1. Start with a square sheet of paper, and turn it so that it looks like a diamond. Color side should be underneath.
  2. Fold it in half horizontally so that the bottom corner touches the top corner. This is called a Shawl Base.
  3. Fold it in half vertically so the left and right corners touch. Then unfold.
  4. Fold the left and right corners up so that they meet at the bottom-center of the triangle. These are the cat’s ears (and the back of the head). Make sure to leave enough room for the face!
  5. Fold the top of the head down, almost to where the sides of the center point meet the inside edges of the ears. Turn over.
  6. The cate face is complete, but it needs eyes, a nose, and a mouth!

Origami Rabbit Face

  4. Fold the bottom of the triangle up about a quarter of the way. The vertical line made in step 3 should line up and the crease should be parallel with the bottom of the triangle. This step decides how thick the ears will be.
  5. Fold the two bottom corners up and toward the vertical center line. Important! Be sure to leave a little space on either side of the bottom. The bottom should be flat, not pointy like a diamond. Doing this creates space between the ears.
  6. Turn over so that you can see the front of the face.
  7. Fold the top, center corner down until the edges meet the outside of each ear. Then unfold.
  8. Using the same crease that you made in step 7, fold the top corner back so that it becomes hidden.
  9. Fold a little bit of the bottom corner behind. There are no guiding marks, so feel free to fold based on what looks good to you.
  10. The rabbit face is complete, but it needs eyes, a nose, and a mouth!
